For nearly three years, GTA VI coverage was trailer archaeology. The August 27, 2026 Extended Look changed that: 26 minutes of PS5 gameplay is the first substantial evidence of how the game actually plays, and it resolved a long list of open questions in one afternoon.

The headline is that GTA VI is built on Red Dead Redemption 2's systems philosophy rather than GTA V's. Inventory is limited and physical. Bodies persist and can be looted and carried. Traversal has weight. The wanted system has tiers of intent rather than a single escalating aggression curve. This is a slower, more deliberate game than GTA V at the mechanical level, without giving up the arcade release valve the series depends on.

This hub summarises the confirmed system set. The spokes cover each in depth - Combat and stealth, the wanted system, vehicles and handling, and the full activity list.

Confirmed combat and stealth mechanics

From official footage and the Extended Look.

  • Prone movement. You can go fully flat and crawl, which is new to the series and changes approach routes entirely.
  • Body carrying and looting. Corpses persist, can be searched for items, and can be moved out of sight.
  • Zip ties. NPCs can be restrained rather than killed - A non-lethal option the series has never systematised.
  • Human shields. Confirmed as a tactical option during firefights.
  • Character abilities. Jason has a slow-motion mode that highlights enemy weak points; Lucia has a single-shot slow-motion trigger.
  • Refined melee. Rebuilt from GTA V's minimal system, with visible weight and directionality.

Why this hub is organised around systems

GTA VI has not shipped, so a feature list would be guesswork dressed as fact.

What can be described honestly is the shape of each system Rockstar has actually shown. Everything below is sourced to official footage, and anything unconfirmed is labelled where it appears.

The inventory change is the biggest one

GTA V let you carry an arsenal in your pockets forever. GTA VI does not.

The confirmed limit is two rifles and two pistols on you. Everything else goes in the trunk. It is the Red Dead Redemption 2 model, adapted, and our carry limit guide covers how it works in practice.

What it changes

One rule, four consequences. Vehicles become equipment rather than transport. Mission prep becomes a real decision.

Running out of options in a firefight becomes possible. And the whole thing becomes the most argued-about design choice in the game.

Everything else follows from it

Once weapons are scarce, the systems around them start to matter.

That is why the police model, the vehicle trunk and the non-lethal options all read as one design rather than separate features. The wanted system guide covers the police side in detail.

Police response by wanted level

The six-star system returns, but the behaviour behind it is tiered - Police now have intent, not just aggression.

LevelReported behaviour
1 starLocal response, short search radius, easily broken
2 starsNon-lethal attempts first; arrest is the goal, and surrender is a real option
3 starsCoordinated pursuit, roadblocks, wider cordon
4 starsHeavier units and air support
5–6 starsEscalated, sustained, state-level response

Confirmed side activities

Both traditional GTA fare and Red Dead carry-overs.

  • Basketball, pool, boxing, mini golf and gym workouts
  • Scuba diving and kayaking
  • Street racing, day and night, plus dirt-bike racing
  • Shooting range challenges
  • Wrestling
  • Hunting and fishing, returning from Red Dead Redemption 2
