The short version

  • You can carry two rifles and two pistols on your person.
  • Everything else is stored in your vehicle's trunk.
  • This is Red Dead Redemption 2's system, adapted to a modern setting.
  • It makes vehicles logistical equipment rather than transport.

The single most consequential thing confirmed by the Extended Look was not a set piece. It was an inventory rule.

GTA V let you carry every weapon you had ever picked up, forever, in your pockets. GTA VI does not, and almost every other system in the game bends around that.

What the rule changes, in order of impact

  1. Mission preparation becomes a decision. You have to choose a loadout before you know exactly what you are walking into.
  2. Your car becomes equipment. Losing it mid-mission means losing everything you did not bring in with you.
  3. Firefights can be lost by attrition. Running dry is now a real outcome rather than a menu problem.
  4. Parking is tactical. Where you leave the vehicle determines your fallback options.
  5. Vehicle theft becomes a resupply problem. A stolen car does not have your trunk in it.

Where it comes from

Red Dead Redemption 2 put your long guns on your horse and your sidearms on your belt.

It was divisive then too

For the same reason it will be now. It put friction into a loop that had none.

People do not like being told to plan.

The argument RDR2 won

Friction is what makes a decision a decision.

A game where the answer to every problem is already in your pocket does not have combat encounters. It has combat sequences.

The obvious risk

Convenience. RDR2's version was often annoying because horses wandered off.

The equivalent failure here

A car that gets destroyed, impounded or stolen at the wrong moment.

Your whole loadout is in it. Our vehicle systems guide covers what the trunk is doing.

What would fix it

Vehicle recovery. Weapon persistence. Generous respawning. Any of those would take the sting out.

The Extended Look did not answer it. It is the single detail most worth watching before launch.
