How this planner works

Three numbers decide whether launch day goes smoothly: how much space the game needs, how much you actually have, and how fast your connection is. Only one of those is genuinely unknown.

Why the usable figure is lower than the box

A console never gives you the capacity printed on the packaging. System files, formatting overhead and the reserved partition take a fixed cut before you install anything. A launch PlayStation 5 advertises 825 GB and reports roughly 667 GB. An Xbox Series S advertises 512 GB and reports about 364 GB, which is why it is the console most likely to run out of room. The planner works from usable capacity throughout.

Why we add 10% headroom

Consoles need working space during installation, and a day-one patch of this size is close to certain. Filling the drive to the last gigabyte is how a download fails at 98%. Every "space needed" figure above is the install size plus a tenth.

Why the download estimate is slower than your broadband speed

The planner derates your connection to 85% of its nominal speed. Nobody sustains their advertised rate across a hundred gigabytes, there is protocol overhead, server-side throttling and whatever else is on your network. A cautious estimate that has you finishing early is more useful than an optimistic one that has you downloading at launch.

What we are estimating, and from what

Comparable releaseInstall sizeWhy it is relevant
Red Dead Redemption 2 (console)~100 GBRockstar's last new open world, built for the previous generation.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (PC)~150 GBThe same game with uncompressed current-generation assets.
GTA V (current-generation release)~90 GBA 2013 game rebuilt for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
A typical 2026 open world80-150 GBThe band most comparable releases have landed in.

GTA 6 is current-generation only, which removes the compression compromises that kept cross-generation games smaller. It is also the densest world Rockstar has built. Both point upward, which is why we treat 150 GB as the planning figure and 200 GB as the case to have room for.

What preloading does and does not do

Preloading downloads and installs the game ahead of time; it does not let you play early. The file sits on your console locked until release. Rockstar has confirmed the November 12 preload date but has not announced what time the game becomes playable on November 19, so do not assume local midnight. Our launch day guide tracks that.

The physical edition still downloads

The boxed release contains a download code, not a disc. Buying physically does not avoid the download, though the code can be redeemed from November 12, so it preloads on the same schedule.
