Grand Theft Auto VI ships on November 19, 2026 as a single-player game. This is not an inference: Rockstar's own PlayStation Store FAQ states plainly that 'Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience,' and Take-Two has all but confirmed the same in investor communications.
That surprises people, because GTA Online has been the commercial centre of the franchise for a decade. But it is exactly what Rockstar did last time, twice. GTA V launched in September 2013 as a single-player game with GTA Online arriving roughly two weeks later as a free update. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in October 2018, with Red Dead Online entering beta the following month.
So the realistic question is not whether an online mode is coming - It is when, and in what shape. Nothing about it has been announced, including its name. 'GTA Online 2' is a community label, not a Rockstar one.
One question gets its own tracking page: whether you will be able to run your own server. Our GTA 6 server hosting page follows the Cfx.re signals, the scam warnings and every official word on community servers.
Want to run your own GTA 6 server?
Rockstar owns the FiveM team and says roleplay is part of the plan. But no GTA 6 hosting exists to buy yet, and companies are already charging for it. One tracked page holds what is confirmed, what the signals mean and who is selling vapor.

What 'single-player experience' actually rules out
It rules out a persistent online world on day one. That much is plain.
What it does not rule out
Co-op, companion features and asynchronous modes are not addressed either way. Rockstar has simply said nothing about them, and silence is not a denial.
The wording is unusually direct for a company that normally hedges. That reads as expectation-setting. Our single-player page tracks the exact phrasing.
What this means for you
What you buy on November 19 is the Jason and Lucia campaign.
If you are budgeting time or money around a launch-day online mode, do not. The likely timing is covered in online launch timing.
What Rockstar did last time
Both of the last two Rockstar releases shipped single-player first, then added the online mode.
| Game | Launched | Online mode arrived |
|---|---|---|
| GTA V | September 2013 | About two weeks later |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 2018 | Beta the following month |
| GTA VI | November 19, 2026 | Not announced |
What is and is not ruled out on day one
- Ruled out: a persistent online world at launch
- Not addressed: co-op, companion apps, asynchronous features
- Confirmed staying: the existing GTA Online, not being switched off
- Not announced: any name, date or shape for a successor
Why Rockstar splits the launches
Two reasons, both boring and both convincing.
Reason one: server load
Launching a campaign and a persistent world on the same day puts every technical risk into one day.
GTA Online's own 2013 launch was rocky even with a two-week gap in front of it.
Reason two: a second marketing moment
A separate online launch gives the game a second wave of coverage weeks later, just as the campaign cycle winds down.
There is a design argument too. Keeping online out of the launch build means monetisation systems cannot compromise the campaign. What happens to the old game is covered in the future of GTA Online.
What a successor would need to answer
Whether progress carries over. Whether the old game keeps updating. Whether the two share an economy.
Rockstar has answered none of those. The one thing it has said is that the current game stays, and crossplay and cross-progression covers what that implies.
