The short version
- Vehicles consume fuel and can be refuelled at gas stations.
- Gas stations also appear to repair vehicles.
- The damage model is substantially deeper than GTA V's, with slow-motion on heavy impacts.
- The trunk stores weapons beyond the personal carry limit.
GTA V's cars were tools. You took one, you used it, you abandoned it, and it had no state that persisted longer than the mission.
GTA VI's cars have fuel, damage that matters, and your equipment inside them. That is three kinds of persistence, and together they change what a vehicle is.
Fuel
Gas stations work. Vehicles use fuel and can be refilled. GTA has never had that.
The rate decides everything
If a tank lasts twenty minutes of driving, fuel is a texture detail and the odd inconvenience.
If it lasts five, it is a system that shapes how you plan a route.
We do not know which
Rockstar has not said, and the Extended Look never held on a fuel gauge long enough to read it.
So treat any specific consumption figure you see as invented.
Damage
Two changes are confirmed. Much more detailed deformation than GTA V, and a short slow-motion beat on heavy collisions.
One is presentation, one is systems
The slow-motion is a camera choice. The deformation is not.
Deeper damage modelling means a crash leaves a mark that stays.
Why that matters with the trunk
A wrecked car handles worse and looks wrecked. It is not a scratch texture you drive off.
Put fuel, damage and trunk storage together and you have three reasons to care about the specific car you are in.
The trunk
Your vehicle is where the weapons you are not holding live. Our carry limit article covers the rule itself.
Vehicle preservation becomes tactical
Keeping the car alive has never mattered in this series. Now it does.
The car is not transport any more. It is storage that happens to move.
A genuinely new way to fail
Arriving at a mission in a car you stole two minutes ago.
With nothing in the trunk.
What changed from GTA V
| System | GTA V | GTA VI |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel | None | Consumed; refuel at gas stations |
| Repair | Body shops and respray | Gas stations appear to repair |
| Damage model | Moderate deformation | Substantially deeper deformation |
| Storage | None meaningful | Trunk storage for weapons |
| Interiors | Modelled, limited interactivity | Fully interactive across 200+ vehicles |
