The short version
- GTA 6's Standard Edition is $79.99, above the $69.99 that had become the standard.
- Adjusted for inflation, $79.99 in 2026 is lower than a 1990s console game price.
- Rockstar moving first gives the rest of the industry cover to follow.
- The Ultimate Edition at $99.99 is a comparatively narrow premium.

Grand Theft Auto VI costs $79.99. That is ten dollars above the price point most publishers settled on after the 2020 console generation began, and it is the most-watched pricing decision in the industry.
The interesting question is not whether it is expensive. It is what it signals.
The inflation argument
Console games cost $49.99 to $69.99 through the 1990s. In 2026 dollars that is well over $100.
The arithmetic is correct
By that measure, game pricing has fallen for thirty years while production costs rose.
This is the argument publishers make, and it is not wrong.
What it leaves out
The market got vastly larger. Digital distribution removed manufacturing and retail margin.
And most large games now carry additional monetisation on top of the box price.
Why Rockstar moving first matters
No publisher wants to be first to $80, because the first mover absorbs all of the anger.
Rockstar can absorb it
GTA VI's demand is inelastic in a way no other game's is.
People who want this game are not going to not buy it over $10.
What happens next
$79.99 becomes the new tier for major releases within eighteen months.
And every publisher that follows gets to point at GTA VI rather than at itself.
The Ultimate premium is unusually modest
A $20 gap between standard and premium is small by current standards. $30 to $40 premiums with early-access weekends attached have become normal.
The missing lever is the interesting part
Rockstar has declined to sell early access.
That is the most aggressive monetisation option available on a launch this size, and given how much it would have made, its absence is worth noting.
