Rockstar has done more than say an upgrade is possible. It has put one on sale: a product called Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade, listed on both console stores with a release date of November 19, 2026.
That turns the edition decision from a guess about the future into arithmetic, and the arithmetic comes out even.

What that does to the decision
If the two routes cost the same, Standard stops being a gamble. You can play the game first and decide afterwards whether a supercar, a boat, a buggy and a set of shops are worth the difference.

Where the sums could still move
Nothing guarantees the Upgrade stays at list price. Stores discount add-ons in sales, and a discounted boxed Standard from a retailer makes the two-step route cheaper than Ultimate outright.
It can move the other way too. Rockstar has not promised the price will hold after launch, and has not said how long the Upgrade will stay on sale.
The boxed copy leaves one route
Physical copies are the Standard Edition as a code in a box; Ultimate is sold digitally. A boxed buyer who wants the extras redeems the code, installs the game and buys the Upgrade from the console store.
That boxed order still qualifies for the Vintage Vice City Pack if it is placed before November 20, because the pack follows the pre-order, not the edition.
Why this is new for Rockstar
Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018 with Special and Ultimate editions alongside the standard game. TechRadar, revisiting it in June 2026, reported that Rockstar offered no way to move between them: a standard owner who wanted the Ultimate content had to buy the whole game again.
A priced, standalone Upgrade answers exactly that complaint. It is the main reason the advice for GTA VI differs from what RDR2 buyers were told.
How the Upgrade works

- Buy or redeem the Standard Edition on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- Let the Standard Edition download complete. Rockstar says the Upgrade can be bought separately from that point.
- Buy Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade from the same console store.
- Find the items as you play. Rockstar describes them as threaded across Jason and Lucia's story and uncovered behind each chapter.
