The short version
- Melee has been rebuilt with visible weight and directionality.
- Zip ties allow NPCs to be restrained rather than killed.
- Human shields are a confirmed option.
- No individual melee weapon has been named.
GTA 6's melee has been rebuilt, with visible weight and directionality, and zip ties let you restrain someone instead of killing them. Of the four weapon categories, melee is the only one where Rockstar has confirmed a systems change rather than just the existence of the class.
That makes it the most interesting weapon page to write and the one with the most actual content behind it.

Why melee stopped being a joke
In GTA V, melee was a punch button that existed so you could punch. Almost nothing rewarded it, so almost nobody used it.
GTA VI changed the rules around it
Not just the animations. The systems surrounding it.
A hard carry limit. A police response that attempts arrest at low wanted levels. Confirmed restraint tools.
Which makes a fist a real option
Ending a situation without drawing a gun is now a supported outcome.
In GTA V it was an accident. Here it looks like a path the design expects you to take.
Zip ties are the real story
Restraint is what gives melee a purpose.
It turns a fight into an ending
Subduing and tying an NPC makes a confrontation a resolution.
Without it, punching someone is just a delay before you shoot them.
What is still open
Whether the game rewards it. Whether it tracks it. Whether a whole mission can be finished that way.
None of that is confirmed, and our non-lethal analysis works through what would have to be true.
Confirmed melee and close-quarters verbs
- Rebuilt melee with weight and directionality.
- Restraining NPCs with zip ties.
- Using an NPC as a human shield.
- Carrying and hiding bodies.
- Prone movement, which changes approach range entirely.
