The short version
- Two long guns at most: one slung, one held. You cannot put both on your back.
- Long guns are always visible, and people react more to one in your hand than on your back.
- Any vehicle can hold long guns for a while; only your personal vehicle keeps the full loadout.
- Named in the Extended Look: the Duke 556 assault rifle and the Moreland 850 shotgun.
The long gun rule is stricter than it first sounds. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson told TGG that you can carry two, but not both on your back: the second one stays in your hand, in public, the whole time.
So the real allowance is one long gun you can walk around with, and a second you carry at a cost.
You can't put both on your back. One goes in your off hand, one on your back if you want to carry two. People will react to you if you are rolling around like that.
Rob Nelson, Rockstar North, to TGG (reported by GamingBolt, September 7, 2026)
How the rule plays out
Nelson described three states, and each one reads differently to the people around you.
Slung is the quiet option
A long gun on your back should be fine in company, Nelson said; one in your hand makes people react and start moving away (Dexerto, September 7, 2026).
Police can also issue a warning for a visible firearm, according to TGG's preview. How that feeds the wanted system has not been detailed.
The car is the armoury
Any vehicle can store the long guns you are carrying, but only for a while; your personal vehicle is the one that keeps your full selected loadout (Gfinity, September 2, 2026). VICE's roundup of July previews adds that every vehicle has a weapon storage crate.
That is more specific than the shorthand in circulation, "two rifles, two pistols, the rest in the trunk". The rule is about long guns, not rifles, and about where each one physically sits. Our vehicle systems guide covers the car side.

About that Ammu-Nation advert
Ammu-Nation was the series' gun shop from GTA III onward, but GTA IV dropped it in favour of underground gun shops and Little Jacob's van. GTA V brought it back with attachments and tints.
Trailer 2's TV spot, for a store PC Gamer calls Phil's Ammu-Nation, is the first sign the chain returns in GTA VI.
Open questions
- Whether SMGs count as long guns. The MP5-style guns in Trailer 2 are two-handed, but no one has said which side of the line they fall on.
- Where a grenade launcher or other heavy weapon sits in the rule.
- What happens to guns left in a temporary vehicle. Previews say they do not stay there permanently, but not when they go.
- How you swap the slung gun for the held one mid-fight.
Where the rule comes from
Red Dead Redemption 2 limited Arthur Morgan to what a cowpoke could reasonably strap to his body and left the rest with his horse (GamesRadar, 2018). GTA VI keeps the idea, with a car in the horse's role and a stricter limit on what can be slung.
An older Rockstar habit
Max Payne 3 (2012) had Max carry his two-handed weapon in his off hand while firing a pistol. Draw a second pistol to dual-wield, and the rifle is dropped.
GTA VI's second long gun works on the same logic: if a gun is carried, you can see where it is.
Frequently asked questions
How many rifles can you carry in GTA 6?
Two long guns, the group that covers rifles and shotguns. Only one can go on your back; the second stays in your hand.
Can you store guns in your car in GTA 6?
Yes. Any vehicle can hold the long guns you are carrying for a while, and your personal vehicle keeps your full selected loadout, according to TGG's preview.
Do NPCs react to rifles in GTA 6?
Yes. Rob Nelson said a long gun on your back is usually fine, but one in your hand makes people move away. Police can also issue a warning.
What rifles are in GTA 6?
The Duke 556 assault rifle and the Moreland 850 shotgun appear by name in the Extended Look, according to GamesRadar. Rockstar has not published a full list.
