What Take-Two filed, and where

On August 20, Take-Two Interactive filed subpoenas in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York aimed at identifying the person or group behind CyberLeek, the persona that has been publishing unreleased Grand Theft Auto VI material since mid August.

The filings use the Digital Millennium Copyright Act's subpoena mechanism, which lets a rights holder compel platforms to hand over identifying records tied to alleged infringement without first filing a full lawsuit. It is the same legal tool the company has reached for in earlier mod and cheat cases, and it moves faster than ordinary discovery.

Two companies are on the receiving end. Microsoft is being asked for its internal investigative records on the CyberLeek persona along with account level data. Discord faces the broader demand: identifying information for users across three named servers, covering activity from June 1, 2026 onward.

Both companies have until September 4, 2026 to comply. Neither had commented publicly on the filings at the time of writing.

What the subpoenas ask for

As described in reporting on the court filings, the demands cover:

• Discord account IDs and registration email addresses for members of the three named servers
• Registration and login IP addresses, with timestamps
• Phone numbers attached to the accounts
• Device identifiers, including Windows device IDs held by Microsoft
• Linked third party connections on the accounts
• Microsoft's internal records from its own investigation of the persona

Who CyberLeek is, as far as anyone knows

Nobody outside the investigation has put a name to the persona. What is established is the pattern: beginning in mid August 2026, days before Rockstar's Extended Look premiere, CyberLeek began publishing unreleased gameplay video and what appeared to be map material from the game.

The material is watermarked with the name of a cryptocurrency memecoin, and reporting since the first wave has pointed at a financial motive rather than an act of protest. Coverage of the coin's trading activity suggests the person or group behind it may already have started converting attention into money.

That framing matters for the legal side. A leaker profiting from infringement by way of a traded token gives a rights holder a cleaner damages story than a leaker acting out of impatience, and it gives the court a paper trail that subpoenaed platform records can be matched against.

Rockstar has issued a public statement on the leaks, and its parent company's actions in court have so far moved faster than its public communications.

What it means for the game, and for players

The launch is not moving. Grand Theft Auto VI remains set for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, and the marketing beat that mattered, the 26 minute Extended Look, went out on schedule despite the leak landing days before it.

For players, the practical question is spoilers. Leaked material spreads through recommendation feeds whether or not you go looking for it, and the volume reported in this wave means story details could circulate well before launch.
