The short version

  • GTA 6 has been delayed twice, from a 2025 window to May 26 2026, then to November 19 2026.
  • Both delays were announced by Rockstar directly, not leaked, and both cited quality rather than a specific problem.
  • Total slippage from the original window is roughly eighteen months.
  • The current date has held for longer than either previous date and now has pre-orders behind it.

Grand Theft Auto VI has been publicly delayed twice. That is fewer times than the internet remembers, because a great deal of what circulated between 2023 and 2026 was speculation about delays that never happened.

What follows is only the record: what Rockstar actually announced, when, and in what words. Everything else - The insider accounts, the 'internal target' claims, the analyst notes - Is excluded, because none of it changed a date.

The record

  1. December 4, 2023
    2025 window announced
Trailer 1 arrives, pushed out a day early after leaking. The video ends with a 2025 stamp. No month, no quarter - Just a year, which in publisher language is a placeholder more than a promise.
  2. May 2, 2025
Delay one - Moved to May 26, 2026
Rockstar publishes Trailer 2 and, in the same news cycle, moves the game roughly a year. The stated reason is the extra time needed 'to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.'
  3. November 2025
Delay two - Moved to November 19, 2026
A second, shorter slip of just under six months. Take-Two frames it as a final adjustment. This is the date that has held.
  4. June 25, 2026
    Pre-orders open
Editions, prices and bonuses go live worldwide. From this point, moving the date carries a refund and retail cost it did not carry before.
  5. Summer 2026
    Date reaffirmed
Take-Two publicly confirms November 19, 2026 remains the date and that the marketing campaign is beginning.

What the delays actually tell you

Neither announcement named a problem. That is normal. Publishers do not itemise what is unfinished, because it invites a news cycle about that one thing.

The shape of the two delays is the tell

A twelve-month slip, followed by a five-month one.

That is a project finding its footing, not a project falling apart.

The second delay is the reassuring one

Precisely because it was small.

A game in serious trouble does not move by five months and eleven days. It moves by a year, or it goes quiet.

The 2022 breach, and why it is not the cause

In September 2022 a large volume of in-development footage was stolen and published. It gets blamed for the delays constantly.

The timeline argues against it

The 2025 window was announced fifteen months after the breach.

You do not announce a date if the thing that broke your schedule already happened.

It did real damage, just not to the schedule

To the company, to its staff, and to the quality of public information about the game.

Four-year-old build data has polluted the discussion ever since, which is why we have a leak policy.

Will it move again?

Nobody outside the company knows. But it is considerably less likely than it was a year ago.

What has changed since the last slip

Each one raises the cost of moving.

  • Pre-orders are live and money has changed hands
  • Retail allocation is set
  • The marketing campaign has started
  • Take-Two reaffirmed the date in public

None of that is a guarantee

Cyberpunk 2077 shipped on a date it had also reaffirmed.

But the cost of moving November 19 is now measured in refunds and retail relationships rather than in a press release. That is a real constraint.

Frequently asked questions

How many times has GTA 6 been delayed?

Twice: from a 2025 window to May 26, 2026, and then to November 19, 2026.

Why was GTA 6 delayed?

Rockstar cited the additional time needed to deliver the game at the quality it wanted. It has not named a specific technical or production cause.

Did the 2022 leak delay GTA 6?

There is no evidence it did. The 2025 release window was announced more than a year after the breach.

Could GTA 6 be delayed again?

It is possible but now less likely - Pre-orders are live, the date has been publicly reaffirmed, and marketing has begun.
