That is the smallest budget on current hardware

What a realistic install would take
Rockstar has not announced a size. Modelled against comparable current-generation releases, a 150 GB install plus day-one patch headroom is close to half the console.

What actually expands a Series S
Only two kinds of storage can run a current-generation Xbox game: the internal drive, and an official Storage Expansion Card.
A USB drive will not run it
It can hold Series X|S games. It cannot run them.
That distinction matters more here than anywhere else, because the cheap option does not work.
But a USB drive is still worth having
Moving the game back from USB is faster than re-downloading it.
So an external drive is useful for archiving, just not for playing.

On a 512 GB Series S that is a deadline
It is the deadline for having cleared space, not for starting to think about it.
Anything you plan to delete should be gone by then.
