The short version

A Steam Deck owner asking about GTA 6 is really asking two things. Will it run on the device, and can I play it away from the television on November 19? The first waits on a PC version Rockstar has not announced. The second already has an answer.
Between them sits the most useful evidence there is: what the Deck does with the Rockstar games that are on PC today. It says a lot about the obstacles a future PC release would face on handhelds.

The anti-cheat lesson from GTA V
GTA V held a Playable rating until 17 September 2024, when Rockstar added BattlEye anti-cheat to the PC game. Rockstar's explanation was short.
GamingOnLinux reported at the time that BattlEye has offered opt-in support for Linux and Proton since 2021, so the block reflects a configuration choice rather than a technical wall. Valve briefly rated the newer GTA V Enhanced as Playable in March 2025, then moved it back to Unsupported for the same reason.
Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online. You will be able to play GTAV Story Mode but unable to play GTA Online.

What that means for a future GTA 6 PC release
GTA 6 launches as a single-player game, as our single-player launch explainer covers. A story-only PC build would have no online mode to protect, and online anti-cheat is what broke GTA V on the Deck.
If a later online mode arrived on PC with the same Windows-only anti-cheat setup, the Deck would likely end up where GTA V is: story yes, online no. That is our inference from one precedent, not a Rockstar statement.
Why Windows handhelds are a different case
The ROG Ally and Legion Go run Windows, where BattlEye is supported, so they sidestep the problem that sank GTA V's Deck rating. They still depend on a PC version existing, and on performance nobody can measure yet.
For raw capability, RDR2 is the nearest benchmark. In February 2022 outlets measured it at roughly 40 to 55 frames per second on the Deck at low settings, with Digital Foundry noting random crashes, according to PCGamesN's roundup. GTA 6 is a newer, denser game built for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so treat those figures as an upper bound.
What works on November 19: stream your own console
If you own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S, a handheld can play GTA 6 from day one by streaming from that console over your network. The game runs at home; the handheld shows the picture and sends your inputs. Whether Rockstar ever ships a native PC build is a separate question, tracked on our PC version page.

The catch with streaming
Sony asks for at least 5Mbps for PlayStation Portal and recommends 15Mbps. Picture quality and latency depend on your home network, not on the handheld.
Cloud streaming, where the game runs on a remote server and you need no console at all, has not been announced for GTA 6 on any service.

Can you play GTA 6 on Steam Deck?
