The short version
- Rockstar has never published a map size for any GTA and has not for GTA VI.
- The widely-cited ~125 km² figure is a community estimate, not a fact.
- That would make Leonida roughly two to 2.7 times GTA V's explorable area.
- Interior count and density matter more to how big a map feels than square kilometres do.
The number you have seen is 125 square kilometres. It appears everywhere, usually stated flatly, and it is an estimate assembled by fans from trailer footage.
That does not make it wrong. It makes it an estimate, and the difference matters when the entire internet is repeating it as a specification.
Where the number comes from
The method is reasonable, and worth understanding before you repeat the figure.
How fan estimates are built
Four steps, in order.
- Find known reference objects in footage: vehicle lengths, lane widths, building heights
- Use them to establish scale
- Measure travel across visible terrain in seconds of footage, and apply plausible vehicle speeds
- Cross-reference coastline shapes against real Florida geography
Stack enough of those and you get a range
The range that has settled is roughly 100 to 150 km2.
125 is simply the midpoint, which is why it is the number everyone quotes.
How that compares
Explorable landmass, using the most commonly cited figures. All are estimates.
| Game | Estimated explorable area | Relative to GTA V |
|---|---|---|
| GTA: San Andreas (2004) | ~36 km² | 0.75× |
| GTA V (2013) | ~48–75 km² depending on method | 1× |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | ~75 km² | ~1.3× |
| GTA VI (estimate) | ~125 km² | ~2–2.7× |
Why area is the wrong question
GTA V's map is large and contains a great deal of nothing. Long desert highways, empty mountainside, ocean.
Emptiness is not a flaw
It creates travel time and a sense of scale.
But it does mean square kilometres overstate how much game there is.
The better metrics
Interior count. NPC density. Interactive object count. Rockstar publishes none of them either.
What we do know is that the Extended Look showed street density and interiors well above GTA V, and Red Dead Redemption 2 showed the studio filling space rather than adding it.
Why density beats area
Two maps of identical size can feel nothing alike.
| Scenario | Area vs GTA V | Interiors vs GTA V | How it would feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dense Leonida | 2x | 4x | Enormously larger |
| Flat Leonida | 2x | 1x | Emptier than GTA V |
What would actually change the estimate
- An official statement from Rockstar (unlikely, based on precedent)
- A published in-game map with a scale bar
- Post-launch measurement using in-game coordinates, which is how every previous figure was eventually settled
Frequently asked questions
How big is the GTA 6 map?
Community estimates put it at roughly 125 km², around two to 2.7 times GTA V's explorable area. Rockstar has not published an official figure.
Is GTA 6's map bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2's?
By the common estimates, yes - Roughly 1.6 times. Both figures are unofficial.
Has Rockstar confirmed the map size?
No. Rockstar has never published a map size for any Grand Theft Auto game.
Is a bigger map better?
Not automatically. Density, interior count and interactivity determine how large a world feels far more than raw area does.
