The practical question is the one a parent actually needs answered. That answer has held for 25 years: mainline Grand Theft Auto is adult entertainment, rated 17 and older. GTA 6 will not be the exception.

What an M rating means in this specific game
Rating labels are abstract. The games are not. Rockstar's own pages warn that GTA games regularly feature profanity, violence, sexual themes and illegal acts.
The story is the content
GTA 6 follows Jason and Lucia, one of them straight out of prison, through an armed criminal career in a fictional Florida.
Crime is not a side activity a careful player can avoid. It is the plot, the missions and the economy.
Sex, drugs and the camera
Past games include nudity, sex scenes, torture and drug dealing. The GTA 6 trailers lean into strip clubs and street culture.
The M rating is not a formality about occasional swearing. The content it labels is central and unskippable.
What parents do not have to worry about at launch
Unusually for a blockbuster, the launch build removes the two things family-safety guides usually lead with.
No strangers and no spending
There is no multiplayer at launch: no voice chat, no lobbies, no contact with other players.
No in-game purchases have been announced either. When an online mode eventually arrives, both concerns return. That is when this page updates.
The controls that actually enforce a decision
Both consoles let a family account block games by rating, so an M-rated disc simply will not launch on a child's profile.
On PlayStation it is called Family Management. On Xbox it is Family Settings. Both work per child, and both can require your approval before any purchase.
